Red Bull Zivko Edge 540 Build

Initial Fitting

I fell in love with the Red Bull Zivko Edge 540 planes from the Red Bull Air Race World Championships. They invoke the feeling of speed and performance, not to mention they look amazing. After some searching I found a RC model of the planes. This is my build thread for the plane. Continue reading

Announcing SPMReader

So after a few comments on the DX18 Template Editing Application showing some interest I decided to create a quick POC type project on GitHub. The application is called SPMReader. This application reads the SPM files from Spektrum radios (currently only the DX18). Currently it is written in .NET 4.5.1. There’s no reason that it couldn’t be compiled in a more Mono friendly version of .NET, though. If you’re on a WinOS or have access to a Windows VM I suggest grabbing the latest version of Visual Studio Dev Express and trying it out. I’m not ruling out a Java port. I’m … Continue reading

Where is Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) Headed?

I decided to a little spring cleaning recently. I got onto LinkedIn, Monster.com, and Careers.StackOverflow.com to update my resume. After some refreshing I decided to punch some info into the various job searches just to see what would show up. You know, not even testing the waters, but looking to see what people are looking to fill. Mobile development, native and web, seems to be a hot place to be. Having experience in “open” languages like Java, Ruby, PHP, etc also seem to be highly sought for in a developer. I decided to look for the stuff that I work … Continue reading

Value Hobby Aviator 60 ARF Build

Value Hobby Aviator 60 ARF Build This past Christmas my dad decided to feed my model addiction by giving me a Value Hobby Aviator 60 ARF. If you’re looking for a good high wing aerobatic trainer or just a good lazy afternoon plane then look no further! At the time of this post this ARF cost $100. To my dad’s house it was less than $130. You read that correctly, the ARF to your door should be less than $130! Now, you’re probably think that for only $130 it has got to be a piece of junk. I can say … Continue reading

True/False (Boolean) Values in PowerShell

This one keeps tripping me up. The following value FALSE is actually evaluated as boolean TRUE in PowerShell if you type it in literally. PowerShell is a bit like JavaScript in how it handles true and false, there is true-ish and false-ish. The easiest thing to remember is that $TRUE is true and $FALSE is false. The Windows PowerShell Blog has a good indepth article on boolean values. Searching through Google for this answer tends to lend results that more deal with boolean operators and functions than the literal values themselves.

Increasing External Speaker Sound in CM11

UPDATE: Flash-able zip now available. UPDATE2: From some research the snd_soc_msm is Qualcomm specific. After looking at the file/directory name it actually becomes a little more evident: “sound, system-on-a-chip, Mobile Station Modem”. The following post should apply to recent Android phones with Qualcomm a MSM8960 chipset. I have never really been super happy with how my phone sounds while running CyanogenMod. It isn’t the sound quality that bothers me. It is the fact that the phone sounds much quieter than what I think it should be. Being that I pretty much left TouchWiz as soon as a version of CM … Continue reading

Cyanogen, Inc.

If you haven’t been following the Android news cycle lately you may have missed the news that the team behind CyanogenMod has now formed Cyanogen, Inc. The team has taken on $7 million in investment to create a user-friendly alternative to the skinned versions of the Android OS that ship on most manufacturers phones. This is a very interesting development in the Android community. The CyanogenMod team and its community are, in my opinion, responsible for a large portion of the development of the ideal mobile OS. They’ve chosen to build their ROM on top of the Android Open Source … Continue reading

Open Flight Stabilizer Update

Recently I wrote up an article about how to flash the Open FlightStab software to the Orange RX RS3X. I’ve sense flashed the open source program to another standalone stabilizer and one integrated receiver/stabilizer combo. Each one was pretty easy. With the cost of the RS3X and DSM2 receiver being so low it doesn’t hurt having a couple of these around for that next “project” that comes along. How Does It Fly? Flashing the Open FlightStab is one thing, but how does it fly? Today I got a chance to fly two of my airplanes with the stabilizers. I’ve been … Continue reading

Blog Spam

Somehow my blog is now the target of a good amount of blog spam. I like to think that it’s become popular enough that spammers see it as a good target because of the amount of readers I get! It is annoying to have to start the day by removing 150 spam comments.  I decided to try a new comment spam moderation system.  I haven’t gone and implemented a captcha system yet.  I don’t want to take the nuclear option. Anyhow if you notice you cannot leave a comment on the blog then try to get a hold of me … Continue reading

Open Flight Stabilizer for the Orange RS3X

Update July 14th, 2015: I originally wrote this article 2 years ago. I’ve gone through and updated some of the links and text. Most notably there is much more in terms of availability for some of the parts such as the USBAsp and flashing tool. Also, Orange RX now has more product in the US warehouses including a stabilizer combined with a 6-ch RX. Open Flight Stabilizer I recently purchased a V2 version of the Orange RS3X from HobbyKing.com. It’s a pretty nice little stabilizer for the price. My only real gripe after trying it is that Hobby King takes … Continue reading
